Everyone knows that mortgage interest is deductible from income for federal income tax purposes, but is the same true for state income tax? Any websites that clearly state this? Thanks!

Your State tax department’s website would have that info. Every State is different.

You are asking about the detectability of mortgage interest. As a general rule, the states require that you include Schedule A from your federal income taxes if you itemize. It is my understanding that mortgage interest for primary residence is always deductible, both for federal and for state income tax. I know of no state that has removed the detectability of mortgage interest for primary residence. That would be a sure way for the elected officials to get voted out, if they tried to do that!

You can check the state web site to verify.

There is no law prohibiting your state from disallowing the mortgage interest deduction. Some states disallow all Schedule A deductions, while other states allow all Schedule A deductions.

Still other states allow a fraction of the Schedule A deductions. Louisiana is an example of this.

    That depends on the state.
